[UK] PhD Studentships in Wireless Sensor Networks at Coventry University
Two PhD bursaries are offered at this time in the area of Pervasive Sensing, specifically, Wireless Sensor Networks. The successful candidates will be working as part of a larger academic team on one of the following projects:
- Hardware and systems software design for large scale distributed pervasive systems
- Development of physical models from Intelligent Sensor Network inputs and development of techniques for information extraction and delivery in a Pervasive Computing environment
- Development of techniques for information extraction and delivery in a Pervasive Computing environment
Hardware and systems software design for large scale distributed pervasive systems.
The project is pecifically aimed at the development of enhanced wireless sensor network (WSN) nodes for real life, field sensing applications. The developmental work will involve the design of appropriate hardware and the necessary operating system and systems support software, which will enable WSNs to operate in high speed and data intensive sensing applications.
The candidates might have either an Electronics Engineering or a Computer Science background, however, the ability to work across both domains is essential. Particularly, candidates with a good understanding of microprocessor based systems, operating systems and ability to program are sought.
Development of physical models from Intelligent Sensor Network inputs and development of techniques for information extraction and delivery in a Pervasive Computing environment.
Development of physical models from Intelligent Sensor Network inputs: This project will develop means for producing high quality geometric models, for use in various design contexts, from a starting point of the “cloud of points” data which may be obtained from a located sensor network. This capability is the key to the rapid production of models from physical sources.
Development of techniques for information extraction and delivery in a Pervasive Computing environment:
This project is aimed at research positioned at the highest abstraction level in Wireless Sensor Networks, namely that of extracting and representing the information drawn from such large scale, complex systems. This representational capability is essential in deployment and usage of all large scale sensor networks applications.
The candidates might have either a Mathematics or a Computer Science background, however, the ability to work across both domains is essential. Particularly, candidates with a good understanding 3D graphics and ability to program are sought.
Deadline for PhD applications is 1st November 2006.
The shortlisted candidates will be required to participate in an Open Day at the Cogent Computing Centre (during November 2006).
