International Scholarships

An EPSRC-funded PhD Studentship is available in the Mechanics of Materials Group, Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London in the general area of theoretical/computational solid mechanics. Funding comes in the form of an EPSRC award (DTA scheme), and as such there is much flexibility in the project scope. A few tentative possibilities are: discrete dislocation modeling of high-temperature creep in dispersion-strengthened superalloys, crack nucleation criteria for functionally graded materials, fracture and post-operative remodeling of trabecular bone (jointly with the biomechanics group).

The studentship covers stipend and tuition fees at UK level. The present stipend schedule (including £2,000 London allowance) is:

2007/8 £14,600
2008/9 £14,900

International (non-UK) students are eligible, but only if accompanied by additional funding to cover the added expense of foreign tuition fees. This may come in the form of a foreign scholarship, although opportunities are available for internaional students from the EPSRC (UK).

An outstanding student is sought to fill this position. Possible means of support for exceptionally good international students will be explored. The position will remain open until filled.
