[UK] PhD Opportunities in the School of Chemistry, University of Southampton

PhD Opportunities in the School of Chemistry, University of Southampton 2007/08

Applicants for PhD positions in the School of Chemistry are expected to have at least the
equivalent of a UK 2:1 honours degree in chemistry or a related subject.

Studentships for applicants of any nationality in Design of Molecular Sieve Catalysts for the Ammoximation of Cyclic Ketones

The main objectives of this research project are (i) to develop strategies for the preparation and characterization of monofunctional (redox active) and bifunctional (Brönsted acid and redox active sites) single-site heterogeneous catalysts for the ammoximation of cyclohexanone and other cyclic ketones to their corresponding oxime using air (or oxygen) as the oxidant; (ii) to optimize and explore the advantages of the in situ production of hydroxylamine (NH2OH) inside certain open-structure, redox molecular sieve catalysts for the direct (and selective) ammoximation of cyclic ketones using air as the oxidant.

The project will focus on a better understanding of the fundamental principles governing the nature of the active sites in these catalysts, thereby facilitating structure-property relationships to be studied.

These studies will aid the development of environmentally benign and “green” methods of producing hydroxylamine using aluminophosphate-based single-site heterogeneous catalysts. The studentship will be funded by Honeywell Resins and Chemicals LLC., who are one of the world’s largest producers of caprolactam (precursor to nylon-6).

Academic supervision will be provided by Dr. Robert Raja (http://www.chem.soton.ac.uk/) and Industrial supervision by Dr Alan Levy at Honeywell (New Jersey, USA), who has extensive experience in organic synthesis, organometallic chemistry, and industrial organic chemistry with a major focus on nylon intermediates.

The successful applicant will join a collaborative research group and enjoy state of the art materials synthesis and catalysis facilities in the Structural and Materials Chemistry group at Southampton University. In addition, the studentship will also facilitate access to sophisticated characterization techniques and high-throughput synthetic capabilities at UOP (a subsidiary of Honeywell based in Illinois, USA), one of the premier catalyst companies in the world.

Applicants should have a good degree in Chemistry and a keen interest in synthetic inorganic
chemistry and catalysis.
