The Institute of Cancer Research (a College of the University of London) is a world-class cancer research organisation with HEFCE RAE ratings of international excellence across all of its research programmes. In partnership with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust we form the largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe, dedicated to research that extends from epidemiology, genetics and molecular biology, through drug discovery and development, to cancer diagnosis and patient treatment. This makes us uniquely placed to work towards our vision that people may live their lives free from the fear of cancer as a life threatening disease.

Applications for graduate studentships starting in October 2009 are invited from suitably-qualified graduates or final year undergraduates who hold or expect to gain a first/upper second class honours degree or equivalent in Physics or a related subject.

Successful candidates will undertake a four year research training programme under the guidance of named supervisors. Successful applicants will receive an annual stipend – £19,096 (inner London – Chester Beatty Laboratories, Fulham Road) or £17,770 (outer London – Sutton Campus).

For further details on these studentships and details on how to apply, please visit: www.icr.ac.uk/phds

The closing date for applications is 1 December 2008.
Interviews will be held from 2nd – 4th February 2009.

Unification of Immutability and Ownership
I am actively looking for a PhD student in programming languages (ownership types and immutability). I have full funding available to cover fees, living, and travel. Please email me for more information if you have a Masters or Honours degree and a good background in programming languages and/or type systems! Applications from both domestic and international students invited.

The Project
Object-oriented programs at run-time consist of objects – small software components that are created, changed, and destroyed as the program runs. The uncontrolled ability of objects to change other objects is well known to result in many errors in large systems.

Immutability – an ability to prevent changes to objects – is a mechanism that could be used to provide such control. While immutability controls whether an object can be changed, it is not enough: we need to be able to also control which objects can perform the changes.

Ownership – an ability to control which objects can access a given object – is a mechanism that can be used to control which objects are allowed to perform the changes. Immutability benefits greatly from ownership that prevents unauthorised objects from accessing and changing the object.

Immutability and ownership evolved separately: while some proposed languages attempt to support both, they treat them as independent concepts.

We propose to treat them as facets of a more general unified concept. This work aims to advance the science of programming by providing a unified treatment of immutability and ownership, simplifying both the theory and practice of object-oriented programming.

The Student
This project requires a strong mathematical logic or formal methods in Computer Science background.

Closing date: 1 May 2009

Please refer to our website for further information on Research Centres, and please feel free to approach academic members of staff for advice. For all information and initial inquiries, contact Chrissie Ferngrove at the address below. Information on our research centres is available at http://www.winchester.ac.uk/?page=3532.

If you are unsure whether your proposed project can be supervised, please submit a paragraph explaining what you are intending to do, by email to Chrissie Ferngrove (again, see below), for onward transmission to the relevant Faculty Head of Research & Knowledge Exchange.

Applications are welcome from domestic, EU and non-EU International Students. From 1 February 2008, the University is offering domestic tuition rates to all overseas doctoral students who qualify for study.

Existing Probationer research students at the University of Winchester may also apply.

A full-time MPhil/PhD funded studentship is available in the Lancashire Business School. The studentship is tenable up to 3 years (subject to satisfactory progress) with an expected commencement date of 1 January 2008. The studentship will cover the cost of tuition fees at UK/EU and Overseas rates plus a maintenance based grant of £12,940.

This project is jointly sponsored by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA), Sellafield Limited and the University of Central Lancashire. It aims to examine the forecasting and management of skill requirements in the nuclear industry, with initial focus on the decommissioning industry. The project’s objectives will be to generate a baseline of knowledge on the theory and practice of skills forecasting and management on very long projects; to document, compare and contrast current skills forecasting practice amongst current site licensing companies in the UK nuclear industry; to develop models of good practice for exploratory discussion and monitored application by each tier of the industry and to propose a model of good practice for adoption by the industry.

The project will involve extensive interaction with senior managers and strategists in the industry and will provide a unique experience for anyone interested in developing a career in the UK nuclear industry. It would suit a graduate with a numerate background and an understanding of organisations, who is enthusiastic to learn about business modelling techniques and the manpower and skill planning which is critical to major projects. This is an outstanding opportunity to join the strategic development team of a fast growing industry and secure a doctoral qualification.

Applicants are required to submit two samples of their written work taken from their previous higher education. (e.g. chapter from dissertation, or essay) along with their completed application form.

Applicants should have, or expect to receive, an upper second class or first class honours degree or an MSc in a related discipline.

Informal enquiries (project related) may be directed to Professor David Hamblin (+44 1772 894601, or email dhamblin[a-t]uclan.ac.uk)

Requests for an application pack (quoting the reference number RS/08/10) should be directed to the Graduate Research Office. Tel +44 (0)1772 895082 or e-mail researchdegrees[a-t]uclan.ac.uk

Interviews will be held on 19th November 2008

Closing Date 17th October 2008
