The Geography Department and Coastal and Marine Resources Centre of University College Cork, Ireland, have two funded research studentships available to commence in October 2008. The studentships cover university fees at the EU level, and an annual stipend. The PhD project aims to address issues of the use of Geoinformatics technologies for predicting the effects of climate change with respect to those coastal areas that are most at risk. The potential benefits of integrating remotely sensed data derived from satellite, airborne and field sources, with other spatial information will be considered. Automated image processing routines will be developed in order to better understand the coastal system at present. Through scenario testing of potential climatically induced terrestrial, marine and meteorological changes, the response of different coastal habitats will be modelled to provide greater insight into the present and future functioning of marsh, dune, lagoon and estuarine environments along the Cork coastline. The use of geovisualisation for communication of results to local interest groups will also be explored.

The MSc project will explore the utility of high spatial resolution, multispectral optical and SAR satellite data to map the habitat distribution and vertical expansion/contraction and stability of raised bogs. Methods to characterise habitat distribution include the investigation and classification of the combined multispectral optical and SAR data. Advanced supervised classification techniques will be explored using both hard and soft/fuzzy classifiers in attempting to classify peatland species and habitats. Interferometric techniques, using a time series of C-band and L-band SAR images, will be used to determine the feasibility of identifying and quantifying centimetre level vertical displacements within the bog.

Applicants should have a minimum of a 2:1 Honours degree or equivalent in an Earth, Environmental or Engineering Science discipline. Experience in remote sensing, image processing, quantitative environmental science and in undertaking fieldwork would be an advantage.

For further information please contact
Dr Fiona Cawkwell (e-mail: f.cawkwell[a-t]ucc.ie, telephone: +353 (0)21 490 2707) for the PhD project or
Dr Ned Dwyer (e-mail: n.dwyer[a-t]ucc.ie, telephone: +353 (0)21 470 3104) for the MSc project.

Applicants should send a copy of their CV, with the names and addresses of 3 referees, plus a brief statement outlining their academic interests and their reasonsfor wishing to undertake this research project to the email addresses above.

Closing date for applications is 25th July 2008.

EVAPOTRANSPIRATION MEASUREMENTS AND MODELING FROM LEAF TO LANDSCAPE

The PhD study is jointly funded by the International Research School of Water Resources (FIVA); University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Science; and Risø National Laboratory, Technical University of Denmark.

The principal advisor is Professor Henrik Søgaaard, Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen (hs@geogr.ku.dk), and co-advisors are Senior Researcher Andreas Ibrom and Researcher Ebba Delwik, both at Risø National Laboratory.

PPROJECT DESCRIPTION
Changing climate and land use including aforestation and urbanization may in future have a considerable impact on the terrestrial water resources. Using data from three agricultural and one forest bio-meteorological station on the island Zealand, the aim for the present PhD study is to obtain a better understanding of the variation in the landscape level evapotranspiration fluxes due to land-cover. The separate sources and sinks between ground level and top of canopy will be analyzed using an energy balance approach.

In order to further improve our understanding of the interaction between the land surface and the atmosphere, a modelling approach will also be used. The results obtained from the Danish sites may be compared to similar sites in the worldwide FluxNet network of climate stations (FluxNet/ CarboEurope, see www.carboeurope.org ). Depending on the applicants’ background, the project can have a variety of added areas of focus: water loss –carbon dioxide uptake relationships for different types of vegetation, interception modelling of the forest site, improving measurement techniques for evapotranspiration, satellite image analysis. All these areas fit well with the expertise of the supervisor group at Risø National Laboratory and University of Copenhagen.

QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants should hold a MA degree in science (meteorology, geography, physics, hydrology or biology) or engineering. Knowledge in mathematics and/or data processing is an additional asset.

The scholarship is open to both Danish and international applicants.

Salary and employment conditions
The successful candidate will be employed at the Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen, and is requested to apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the University of Copenhagen. The salary follows standard rules for PhD students. Depending on seniority it is in the range of 23.000-30.000 DKK/month.

The rules and regulations for a Danish PhD study can be found at:

http://www.nat.ku.dk/uddannelser/phd/.

APPLICATION
Applicants are requested to submit an application that includes (1) a short description of their qualifications; (2) a curriculum vita that provides relevant academic, employment and personal details; (3) transcripts of coursework and documentations of university degrees; (4) a list of reference persons; and (5) evidence of English language competence.

A committee appointed by the board of the Research School will evaluate the applications and selected applicants will be invited for an interview. The final selection of the successful candidate will be made by the board upon recommendation by the committee.

Further information can be obtained from the principal supervisor or from the Head of the Research School, Professor Karsten Høgh Jensen, Tel. +45 3532 2484, Fax +45 3314 8322, email khj@geol.ku.dk. Useful information can also be found at http://www.fiva.dk/.

Applications in English are to be sent to Professor Karsten Høgh Jensen, Department of Geography and Geology, University of Copenhagen, Øster Voldgade 10, DK-1350 Copenhagen K, Denmark, email: khj@geol.ku.dk.

Applications forwarded by email will be preferred.

The application deadline is April 27, 2007 at noon.

The BWPI is pleased to offer a suite of postgraduate fellowships and scholarships to support PhD programmes starting in the academic year 2007/08. These have individual conditions and criteria but in general the research to be undertaken can focus on any aspect of poverty analysis that has both academic and policy relevance. Candidates with disciplinary backgrounds in any relevant social science subject area are encouraged to apply (anthropology, development studies, economics, geography, planning, politics, sociology). Ideally, research topics should relate to the BWPI’s evolving research plan.

The topics listed below provide an illustration of areas of work that are of interest to BWPI but potential candidates with other poverty related topics are encouraged to apply:

Measuring poverty from income and human development perspectives.

Applying different concepts of poverty – what does this tell us?

The roles of the state and market in poverty reduction.

Why do some poor people stay poor while others escape poverty?

Who benefits and who does not from social protection? Why is this the pattern?

The theory and practice of empowering poor people.

Is economic growth pro-poorest?

It is hoped that the successful candidates will become some of the world’s leading poverty researchers and a key influence on global policy.

The successful candidates will be full-time PhD students registered at the BWPI and will receive research training through attendance of appropriate programmes at either the School of Environment & Development (see www.sed.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate) or the School of Social Sciences depending upon topic selection (see www.socialsciences.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate).

Deadline for receipt of applications is 31 January 2007.

For further information and full details on how to apply please visit: www.manchester.ac.uk/bwpi
