[Spain] Scholarships for PhD Studies from The Spanish National Research Council

The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC – Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas) offers grants (5% of the total number of grants offered are reserved for applicants with disabilities ) to graduate students and postdoctoral fellows wishing to undertake a scientific career in the CSIC’s Centres and Institutes.

  • 200 grants for graduate students to conduct research leading to obtain a PhD degree (4 years duration).
  • 200 contracts for graduate students to carry out one-year research projects.
  • 200 contracts for postdoctoral fellows (3 years duration)

Characteristics

  • Annual salary: €14,400 during the first 24 months.
  • After completing the initial 24 month period, fellows having obtained the qualifications established by the Spanish regulations for PhD studies may sign a contract with the CSIC, for a second 24 month period.
  • Scholarships include the cost of University fees and, after the second year, mobility allowances of €4000 per year to enable short stays at research Institutions other than CSIC.
  • Medical insurance is fully covered by the Spanish National Health Service.
  • The starting date will be 1st January 2007.


Entry standards and prerequisites

  • Applicants should hold a degree entitling them to engage in PhD studies under Spanish legislation. For the present application, the degree certificate will be considered validated if applicants have been admitted to a postgraduate (or doctorate) programme at any Spanish University.
  • The minimum overall score in studies at degree level should be 60%, equivalent to 1.6 in a scale ranging from 1 to 4 (where 1 is the minimum mark needed to pass and examination and 4 is the maximum possible mark in the Spanish system).
  • The date of completion of the degree must be June 2003 or later.
  • Nationals from non-EU countries must hold a valid residence permit, or a student / research visa.
  • Applicants must contact potential supervisors at the CSIC before submitting an application.
  • Proficiency in the Spanish language is not required. However applicants should refer to the information on Spanish language requirements provided by the University in whose doctorate programme they intend to enrol.

How to apply

On line applications are strongly encouraged. The online application form will be available at: www.csic.es. Alternatively an application form can be downloaded from the same web address.

Applications will include:

  1. An outline of the applicant’s proposed research project (maximum 2000 words).
  2. The applicant’s curriculum vitae.
  3. Recent scientific contributions of the research group where the applicant plans to conduct the proposed research project and CV of the potential research supervisor at the CSIC.


Applications must include a set of supporting documents. All documents must be certified as true copies of the originals.

Supporting documents of identity, legal situation and academic qualifications:

  1. Photocopy of passport. For nationals of non-EU countries, photocopy of the residence permit or student visa (from the passport).
  2. Official certified copies of the student’s record/academic transcript. Transcripts must state that the applicant has successfully completed his/her degree; otherwise, applicants must provide an official letter from their institution confirming completion of the degree, in addition to their academic transcript.
  3. Explanation from the university of its grading system.


If the documents are not in Spanish they must be accompanied by a certified official Spanish translation.

Declaration:

Document signed by the applicant stating that in case of being awarded a scholarship, he/she shall not hold another equivalent grant at the same time. The printed forms(including all the required signatures) produced by the on line application, together with the supporting documents, are to be sent to the following address: Departamento de Postgrado y Especialización (CSIC), Serrano 113, 28006-Madrid.

Selection is competitive and based on academic merit and demonstrated research potential.
