The OSI Scholarship program is administered upon an agreement between the American University in Bulgaria and the AUBG Program Coordinators in the eligible countries. All OSI Financial Awards from 2007-2008 will be Full and Partial Awards, and will be given preferably to good students who otherwise would not be able to cover the full costs of their education:

Full Awards are called OSI Scholarships and are limited in number. They cover tuition, residence hall and student activity fees at AUBG. All students who receive an OSI Scholarship are expected to cover the cost of food, books, travel, visas and residence permits, and health insurance. These scholarships cover the eight-semester period required to complete an AUBG degree provided that the recipient maintains the required cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Partial awards are need based OSI-funded partial financial aid awards on top of AUBG need and merit based financial aid awards.

Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, FYROM (Macedonia), Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Romania, Russia, Serbia and the region of Kosovo, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

A citizen of one of the countries listed in eligible countries who holds or will hold a high school degree by August 2006, and meets all of the eligibility requirements, may apply for the Soros Scholarship.

For students interested to attend AUBG in 2007-2008.

Applications

Applications can be submitted on-line or downloaded. Applicants are encouraged to submit an on-line application. If on-line service is unavailable, applications should be downloaded and printed by the applicant. Any applications submitted after the deadline (December 22, 2006 for paper based, and January 1, 2007 for online applications) will not be reviewed for the OSI Scholarship but will be reviewed for regular AUBG admission.

Supporting documentation to be included with the on-line or paper based application. The essay can be attached with the online application:

• Official high school transcript with GPA
• Certified English translation of transcript
• Three letters of recommendation, with translation if not written in English
• Completed Financial aid documentation – sent to AUBG Admissions office by March 1, 2007
• Students, who have taken the official TOEFL and SAT Reasoning Test, should require ETS to send their official scores to AUBG. The AUBG Institution code for receiving official scores is 2451.

Financial Assistance

Any student interested in applying to AUBG should be encouraged to complete the application for financial assistance, as AUBG and OSI financial aid will be awarded based on merit and need. Many admitted students receive substantial AUBG and OSI funded financial assistance in the form of grants, loans, and work-study. Some of the students who are not selected as OSI Scholars may also be eligible for a merit scholarship, which is awarded by the AUBG Scholarship Committee. Students who do not submit the application for financial assistance and the supporting documentation along with their application for admission are not considered for any financial aid.

Testing

The AUBG Admissions office strongly recommends that all applicants take the official TOEFL and SAT Reasoning Tests offered in the country for admission purposes, and have their official test reports sent directly to the AUBG Admissions office by filling in the AUBG code for receiving official test scores – 2451.

In cases when the applicants have not taken the tests already, or are not planning to take them by the end of January 2007, the AUBG Coordinator will be responsible for administering the Institutional TOEFL (ITP) on January 20, 2007 and the Institutional SAT (MAPS – Multiple Assessment Programs) on February 24, 2007.

The Institutional TOEFL and SAT tests are acceptable only at AUBG and not at other institutions. If an applicant has taken a regular TOEFL or SAT, official scores must be requested by the applicant to be sent directly to AUBG. The AUBG Institution code for receiving official scores is 2451.

Final Selection

The selection of finalists for the OSI Scholarships takes place at AUBG in March by representatives of AUBG’s Admissions Committee.

Assessment of applicants is based on their academic records, on test scores, on ratings on the essay included in the application, on their general interests outside of academics, and on financial need. Previous study outside their home country does not increase the possibility of the candidates’ receiving a Soros Scholarship. The decisions of the Admissions Committee are final.
