PhD Student in aquatic biogeochemistry with focus on spatial and temporal dynamics of organic carbon export from soils to surface waters

The Department of Environmental Assessment is a centre for freshwater and forest soil research with a special focus on environmental monitoring and assessment. The department also performs teaching and gives expert support to the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, SEPA. At present the department consists of some 65 employees; ca 25 of which are senior and post-doc scientists and some 10 PhD students. The department is divided into four research sections: geochemistry, biodiversity, organic environmental pollutants and modelling, and covers program areas such as (i) environmental monitoring and assessment, (ii) environmental pollutants, and (iii) integrated catchment monitoring. We now would like to enlarge our research group by announcing a Ph D Student position in aquatic biogeochemistry.

Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is a key determinant of water quality that is strongly influenced by climate. The doctoral student’s research will seek to bridge the gulf between a high-resolution, process oriented understanding of DOC’s terrestrial origins in the boreal forest, and long term, landscape scale monitoring data in order to better understand the implications of climate change for DOC in aquatic ecosystems. The project will create a model framework for upscaling from hillslope processes. Fieldwork on the Krycklan Catchment in Västerbotten will be used to test key hypotheses.

We seek for a dedicated candidate with a degree in environmental science or engineering. Specialization in biogeochemistry is desirable.

PhD study programmes leading to a doctorate include a minimum of four years of full-time studies after your undergraduate degree. To be admitted as a postgraduate student, you must already have a degree from at least a three-year university course.

SLU is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

The last decade has witnessed a dramatic development in the area of optical microscopy and spectroscopy. Using metallic nanostructures, it is now possible to control the propagation and interaction of light at the nanoscale using so-called surface plasmon resonances. The structures can be used as nanoscopic biological tags or sensors in advanced bioimaging, medical diagnostics and biosensor development. It is also possible to use the structures to design novel materials, so-called metamaterials, with unique optical properties.

The Division of Bionanophotonics at the Department of Applied Physics, Chalmers University of Technology, now seeks two doctoral students in nanooptics. We seek creative and independent candidates with very high analytical capacity, excellent language skills and a particular interest for cross-disciplinary research.

One of the PhD positions focuses on development of biosensors and cellular markers based on gold and silver nanoparticles. Of particular interest is the possibility to design the particles resonance wavelength through nanolithography and the possibility to specify their interaction with biological structures using surface functionalization. A suitable background is Master of Science in biotechnology, chemistry, or related areas.

The other PhD position focuses on fundamental experimental studies and electrodynamics simulations of nanoptical phenomena. Of particlular interest is the possibility to control the distance between particles at the nanoscale using optical forces and the possibility to design metamaterials that exhibit negative refraction. A suitable background is Master of Science in engineering physics, physics or related areas. Both projects are conducted in a network that involves several international research groups. The PhD-positions are financed through the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF), the Swedish Research Council (VR), Chalmers Biocenter and EU’s framework programs.

For more information about the research conducted in the group please visit the group’s website or contact Prof. Mikael Käll, kall@fy.chalmers.se

The goal with a PhD-position is to develop general research proficiency and a high competence within your specific research area. As a PhD-student, you will conduct research, often together with other researchers and PhD-students, you will follow PhD courses and you will be involved in teaching activities. You will also participate in international conferences and networks. You are expected to write a licenciate thesis within 2-3 years and defend your doctoral thesis within 4-5 years. International applicants may also be eligible for a 4-year PhD-student scholarship, in which case there are no teaching duties.

The application should include: your CV, exams with grades from high-school and university, your Master thesis, contact information for at least two reference persons, and a brief motivation of why you are the most suitable applicant.

In order to improve the gender balance at the Department, we welcome in particular applications from female candidates. Direct recruitment will be applied. Send in your application as soon as possible. Closing date for application is May 31, 2007. Mark the application with reference number 2007/58. The application should be sent in the following formats .pdf or .doc to: registrator@adm.chalmers.se

The Satellite Atmospheric Science (SAT) group at the Department of Space
Science (IRV) is looking for two new PhD students. The IRV is a department of Luleå Technical University, located at the Space Campus in Kiruna, Sweden. We work in close collaboration with the other two big space and environment research institutions in Kiruna, IRF and ESRANGE.
The group focuses on three research areas:

1. Radiative Transfer
We maintain and extend the Atmospheric Radiative Transfer Simulator (ARTS), a public domain program developed and used by groups all over Europe. ARTS can simulate the propagation of thermal radiation in the atmosphere, including the effects of atmospheric absorption and scattering.

2. Humidity and Cloud Research
We use available satellite data (from meteorological and research satellites) to study the hydrological cycle in the upper troposphere and the climatology of humidity and clouds. A focus in the past has been on passive microwave sensors, such as the Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit B, but we plan to increase the use of other available data, for example from the US A-train of satellites, or from Envisat.

3. Development of New Satellite Sensors
We work on new satellite sensor concepts, particularly in the context of future missions of the European Space Agency (ESA). One important project is the further development of a satellite sensor to study ice clouds in the sub-millimeterwave spectral range, along the lines of the CIWSIR (Cloud Ice Water Sub-millimeter Imaging Radiometer) mission proposal. This is expected to include the work with aircraft prototypes.

We are looking for PhD students with research interests and qualifications in one or more of the above areas. To apply, you must have a good or excellent masters degree in a relevant area. You should also have traceable experience in atmospheric science and remote sensing, as well as a good general background in physics and mathematics. Furthermore, you should have good English skills and good computer skills, including some programming experience. Swedish skills will be considered an additional bonus. You should be capable of independent, original, and creative research work, but at the same time be a good team player.

We offer:
As usual in Sweden, the PhD positions are for five years and are associated with a full-time position with a commensurate salary. The duties are 80% research and 20% teaching. We offer an open and friendly work environment with a focus on cutting-edge research and high quality journal publications. More information about the group
can be found on our website http://www.sat.ltu.se

If you have questions about the general working conditions, please contact the head of the department Dr. Hans Weber (Hans.Weber@ltu.se, +46 708 592088). For science questions and questions about the working group, please contact Prof. Dr. Stefan Buehler (sbuehler@irv.se, +46 980 79177).

Applications, marked with the reference no. concerned, are to be addressed to Luleå University of Technology, The Registry Secretary, SE-971 87 Luleå, Sweden.

Applications should be received no later than February 28, 2007.

Reference no: 122-07
