At CEMFI we train students for careers as professional or academic economists. Our graduates acquire the quantitative tools and research skills to work as economists in business, finance, government, and academia.

The basic graduate offering at CEMFI is its highly prestigious Master in Economics and Finance. Unlike many Master programs in the US and elsewhere, ours is self-contained and offers a well respected qualification.
CEMFI grants a subset of its Master students exemptions from the tuition fee and/or scholarships for living expenses amounting up to EUR 10,000 per year. They are granted according to academic merit. In previous years, the Fundación Carolina, in cooperation with the Fundación BBVA, has endowed several scholarships for Latin American students of the Master. Our Master students get very good jobs as economists. For example, in positions dealing with portfolio and risk management, macroeconomic forecasting, policy evaluation, or microeconomic consultancy. Students interested in furthering their research training, either because they aim for a professional career with a stronger research content or because they aim for an academic position, will continue to develop their research skills for another three years and complete the PhD program. NeTS is looking for students coming from renowned universities from around the world, with a very good grade record, who have a very high interest in wireless communications, specially those based on the IEEE 802.11 principles, including sensor, adhoc, infrastructure WLANs and mesh networks. We are also looking for students passionate about multimedia communications in the Internet, and the protocols associated to it. We seek students with a strong background on communications networks, coming from electrical engineering, computer science or related fields. Paramount is a desire to learn and push the limits of current technology, as well as providing new insight into today’s and tomorrow’s networks and services.

The accepted candidates will participate in several projects in tight cooperation with other researchers from our group. Positions available are:

1 PhD / MSc position in “Reconfigurable, adaptive and selforganized sensor networks”. Sensor networks are formed by small, inexpensive and resource limited devices that can interact with the environment (sensing or actuating) and communicate wirelessly with other devices. The work will consist in the design and implementation of a complete new protocol stack based on collaborative and crosslayer techniques, including power control routing algorithms, reconfigurable PHY/MAC protocols and adaptive self organized multihop clustering algorithms.

1 PhD / MSc position in “Modeling adaptive traffic flows over capacity varying wireless mesh networks”. Current WLANs suffer from various impairments which reduce their ability to carry multimedia flows satisfactorily. One of them is the intrinsic variable capacity due to the multiple transmission rates used and caused by the distributed random access to the channel. The proposed thesis will consider the definition of a mathematical framework to analyze multichannel wireless mesh networks, based on the IEEE 802.11s/n prestandard, in order to optimize the QoS and signalling mechanisms (e.g. based on P2P paradigms) to adapt properly the multimedia traffic sources (such as VoIP, video streaming).

1 PhD / MSc position in “Next Generation Multimedia Signalling for the multitechnology, multiservice Internet”. The Internet is undergoing a dramatic evolution through new architectural paradigms, like the NGNs, P2Pbased signalling and applications, mobile and wireless access networks and the like. There is a necessity to design a new set of integrated signalling protocols, which permit to control the transmission of multimedia traffic over such heterogeneous networks. IMS is the current best practice in that area, but its many shortcomings and high complexity suggest to explore new approaches that go beyond IMS, like P2PSIP based systems. The goal of this PhD, thus, is to design, evaluate and standardize new signalling protocols for the Internet of the future. We offer a three year grant to PhD students with a MSc already finished. Moreover, for students without a MsC a four year grant is also possible with the requirement to follow our master program during the first year.

FRAMEWORK
MERIT is a research oriented Master programme within the guidelines of the Bologna process whose scope is Information and Communication Technologies. The MERIT partners above have specific funding from the EU Erasmus Mundus programme to set up a scholarship scheme for third-country graduate students and scholars from the whole world. This scholarship scheme addresses highly qualified individuals who come to Europe to follow the MERIT Masters academic program. Students have to take two 1-year terms at two different institutions to complete the 2-year MERIT Master programme.

ELIGIBILITY
Applications are sought from students in their final year of university programs in engineering, sciences, or an equivalent university degree involving at least 3 years of coursework. Applications from persons holding university degrees in these disciplines will also be considered. In any case, applicants should hold a university degree by September 1st 2008.

Applicants should qualify as “third-country nationals”, as defined in the Erasmus Mundus programme, all countries of the world – with the exception of the EU Member States (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia , Finland, France , Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom), the EEA-EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) and the candidate countries for accession to the EU (Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Croatia and Turkey)- who are not residents of any of the above countries, and who have not carried out their main activities (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the above countries.

SELECTION CRITERIA
Students will be selected on the basis of their CVs, study and academic merits, recommendations, language skills (English), international test results (GRE), etc. Priority will be given to applicants whose background and interest matches closely with those of MERIT. In the case that the applicant has taken the GRE general test and, possibly, the GRE subject test in mathematics, scores from these tests should be sent to UPC directly by the organization administering these tests (ETS). DURATION, CONDITIONS AND AMOUNT OF THE SCHOLARSHIP
Scholarships will be awarded for two years. In each of these years, the student will receive a total of 16.000 Euro in 10 monthly grants per year, for a grand total of 32,000 Euro.

Note that the Erasmus Mundus scholarship also includes a yearly payment of 5,000 Euro for fees, travel expenses, relocation costs, etc. This payment will be used to cover the MERIT tuition fees for non-European students (5,000 Euro / year).

Note also that, if the scholarship is granted, no payments will be made until the grant recipient arrives at the host university. No payment advances will be sent abroad for covering travel and moving expenses.

The selected candidates will integrate the research line on Biomechanics and Mechanobiology to work on the development of new numerical tools for the design of biomaterials for bone tissue engineering. The advertised positions will start mid-September 2007 and be funded for 4 years.

Requirements
The candidates should have a degree in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Physics. Previous knowledge on finite element analysis and programming skills are highly advantageous. Description
PhD 1: Simulation of bone mechanoregulation of rapid prototyped scaffold
The aim of the project is to design and construct scaffolds for bone tissue engineering using rapid prototyping techniques (Bioplotter). Geometrical and mechanical design considerations will be accounted for and a micro finite element model of the scaffold will be developed and validated against in vitro experiments. A dynamic simulation will be setup to model cell adhesion, proliferation and differentiation over time. The extracellular matrix formation will be modelled and validated by comparison with in vitro experiments.

PhD 2: Development of a multiscale analysis for tissue engineering
The aim of the project is to develop computational tools at multiscale levels of the mechanical stimuli experience in tissues under physiological conditions with applications to tissue engineering. The candidate will develop a multiscale analysis with tissues modelled using a microporoleastic approach. A multiscale homogenization approach will be used in a parallel computing environment. This new approach should bring a better understanding of the real mechanical stimuli sensed by the cells when these are stimulated in vitro or in vivo.

General description of the Master/PhD programme:
The candidate is expected to work full time (8h a day) during the four years to obtain his/her PhD. Depending on the diplomas owned by the candidate, he/she will have to follow a few courses equivalent to 60 ECTS from a Research Master in Electronic Engineering (in this case the students will obtain the title of Master in Electronics Engineering) before starting his/her research activities, which should lead to his/her thesis dissertation at the end of the fourth year. During the last two years, the candidate will be additionally funded to develop part of his research work at another European research institution for a duration of at least three months, so he/she can obtain a European PhD. certificate.

Profile of the candidate:
The optimal profile for the position would be a recent graduate in electronic engineering or chemistry or physics (chemistry, chemical engineering, analytical chemistry, biochemical engineering, electronic engineering, physics, etc.) willing to obtain his/her European Ph.D. degree in four years. The candidate should be able to economically sustain him/herself with the grant with no additional funding (something easy to do in Spain with such a grant). Applicants are expected to work in the following area: Development of Microsystems for chemical analysis (pre-concentrator systems, micro and nano gas sensors). Good level of English is required and good Spanish level would be appreciated too.
