Job description
The International Research Centre for Telecommunications and Radar (IRCTR) of Delft University of Technology performs internationally recognized research in the areas of radar, remote sensing and telecommunications.
Nano-technology in electronics and mechanics aims at the development of very small devices, e.g., mm3 scale and smaller, which are computationally powerful and able to perform a wide variety of tasks, including environment sensing and actuation, information extraction and communication. Wireless communications between such devices is an emerging and challenging area of research and will be the topic of this PhD investigation. The research will focus on the physical layer aspects of communication for nano-devices based on the transmission and reception of electromagnetic (EM) fields, processing the received signals and extracting information from them.

Requirements
The researcher should have an MSc degree in electrical engineering or physics and experience in the field of electromagnetics and statistical signal detection. Preference is given to those who have both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. The candidate should have the ability to perform independent research as well as work in a team on research projects. The duties include: 1) Development of a detailed research programme; 2) Realization of this research programme; 3) Preparation and presentation of scientific publications; 4) Preparing and defending the PhD thesis; 5) Supervision of MSc students.
The researcher should have an open personality and good English language skills in order to closely cooperate with colleagues and students as well as write project documents.

Conditions of employment
The estimated starting salary for the PhD student is € 2,000 per month gross, with a maximum of € 2,558 gross (based on a full-time appointment and depending on experience). The successful candidate will be employed by Delft University of Technology for a fixed period of four years within which he/she is expected to write a doctoral thesis. TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home, and the option of assembling a customized compensation and benefits package (the ‘IKA’). Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.

This project is a part of the consortium on New Early Therapies for Intervertebral Disc Diseases: Drug Delivery and Augmentation through Smart Polymeric Biomaterials in the Biomedical Materials Program. Our previously developed osmoviscoelastic model of the disc and mechanoregulation of tissue regeneration will be combined to develop an adaptive biological model of regeneration strategies combining biomaterials, local slow releasing molecular therapies and injectable cell therapies. Model parameters will be determined from in vitro experiments, and the model will be validated against in vivo experiments, mostly conducted by partners in the consortium. Finally the model will be used to select strategies for further development and optimization for use in the clinic.

• Experience with finite element modeling,
• Capacity to write and communicate fluently in English.

Job description
Function title: PhD position
You will study the relationship between vegetation dynamics and sedimentation, vegetation dynamics and plant population dynamics, and their role for birds and invertebrates on salt marshes. These relationships will be studied under different grazing regimes.

Monitoring and controlled experiments will be carried out as a collaborative effort of three PhD candidates: a plant ecologist, an ornithologist and an entomologist. The three PhD candidates will be appointed at the University of Groningen, Community and Conservation Ecology COCON and supervised by prof.dr. J.P. Bakker in cooperation with SOVON Dutch Centre for Field Ornithology (dr. B.J. Ens and K. Koffijberg) and Dutch Butterfly Conservation (dr. M.F. Wallis de Vries).

We are looking for a candidate with a masters or equivalent degree in biology with preferably a strong background in plant ecology. The project is expected to be very demanding and it is essential that candidates have a very creative mind and affinity with field experiments. Willingness to cooperate intensively with the other PhD students is important, as success of the project as a whole depends on close integration of the subprojects. The candidates should have a strong interest in statistics and data mining of large datasets. Good proficiency in the English language is essential. The candidates are supposed to attend a few graduate courses and assist in teaching (10% of time).

Type and level of the position
