The students will use quantum chemistry methods to model the structure, reactivity, catalytic activity and properties of zeolites. The work will include employing different computational approaches – mainly QM-Pot and VASP – and will be done in a close collaboration with experimentalists of the J. Heyrovsky Institute.

PhD Studentships are available for 3+1 years. Highly motivated candidates with a degree in chemistry are eligible. Applicants are expected to have good knowledge of organic chemistry and an experience in organic synthesis.

Postdoctoral positions are available for one year with a possibility of extension. Successful candidates will be qualified to a PhD level and have an extensive experience in organic synthesis and modern analytical methods.

Who can apply?

Kohn Doctoral Scholarships are open to citizens of the United States of America and of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Applicants must be currently enrolled in doctoral degree programmes. The scholarships are intended to allow their recipients to carry out their studies or do research at Masaryk University and to contribute to the activities of the departments where they are received. They cover all fields of teaching and research at the university.

What does a Kohn Doctoral Scholarship cover?

The scholarships have a value of 10,000 Kc per month, and are awarded for periods of from three to ten months, depending on the nature of the research or studies that the applicant wishes to pursue. Scholarship holders are exempt from tuition fees. Accommodation, to be paid for by the scholarship recipients, is available in double rooms at the university halls of residence. Travel costs and health insurance are also the responsibility of the scholarship winners.

Applying for a Kohn Doctoral Scholarship

The application deadline for the scholarships is 15 November 2006.The selection of successful candidates will be made by the Rector of Masaryk University and confirmed by the heirs of Pavel Kohn. The results of the selection process will be made public without unreasonable delay.
