The drug-intake behaviour has been shown to be a major determinant in therapeutic variability. Because of its random features, the adherence can be described using stochastic and statistical methods to quantity its effect for optimization of drug administration strategy and other impacts. Students will gain experience with thin film fabrication and nanotechnology in a state-of-the-art cleanroom and use equipment including a variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometer, a custom designed deposition system, and an atomic force microscope.

Skills that are beneficial include: hands-on experience in a research lab, experience in a thin film fabrication facility, experience with ellipsometry, strong optics and photonics training, Labview programming experience, strong computer skills, and a careful, methodical approach to research and the scientific method.

The research will involve eddy covariance measurements and modeling of energy, water and carbon exchange between urban environments and the atmosphere. It will focus on temporal dynamics of fluxes with special respect to anthropogenic activities, urban vegetation and irrigation. Existing rural and suburban tower sites and upcoming mobile measurements will allow addressing urban-rural differences as well as intra-urban variability.

The successful candidate will enter a Graduate Program in Atmospheric Science or in Geography at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Anticipated start is September 2007 or January 2008. Domestic and international students can expect a waiver of tuition.

Required qualifications: an M.Sc. or a comparable degree in physical geography, atmospheric science, environmental physics, biology or a related field and a background in surface-atmosphere interactions and statistical analysis. Field experience and high-level programming skills are desired. The candidate must be eligible to be admitted by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
