Successful candidates will be registered at the University of Kent as full-time students on one of the five politics programmes offered at UKB (listed below) and will receive payment to cover 50% of their tuition fees.

The PhD student will conduct research in the field of molecular imprinted polymers (MIP) which will be used as building blocks for chemo and biosensors. Conjugated polymers exhibit specific fluorescence characteristics. The project focuses on the changes in fluorescence induced by the target molecule upon binding with the MIP embedded in a matrix of conjugated polymers. The project comprises the study of the underlying mechanism of the observed changes and the design of a specific sensor.

Envisioned research
The intended research is situated in the domains of networked virtual environments (NVE) and human-computer interaction (HCI). More specifically, synchronization in scalable networked virtual environments is studied, supporting simulation-based interaction. The investigated synchronization techniques enhance consistency of the status of the virtual environment as presented to all users. Heterogeneous environments (different platforms, I/O devices etc.) are taken into account. Besides synchronization techniques, interaction techniques and the flexibility in their realization play an important role in the envisioned research. Usable multimodal interaction metaphors are designed for individuals as well as groups of users.

A division of the users in subgroups is considered for both simulation and interaction between several users in order to enhance performance and social interaction. Further details of the PhD research topics will be determined based on the background and interest of the PhD candidate.

Description: We have a 4-year open position for a junior researcher working towards a Ph.D. degree in computer science. This research fits within the intersection of the research areas data and databases, knowledge discovery, privacy, and technology-enhanced learning.

The objective is to supplant the currently dominating approaches to protecting privacy (legal, technological, and market-oriented), which have so far failed to solve the problem, by a technology-based approach to learning and teaching privacy literacy as an essential component of information literacy. The approach will integrate state-of-the-art techniques from knowledge discovery from data distributed over Web and other ubiquitous environments, leveraging context-dependent retrieval of data and content to enable meaningful and effective learning-in-context. The aim of the project is to design and create tools for privacy-literacy education/training and to deploy and test them in real environments (the Web, especially Web 2.0 platforms, ubiquitous environments).

This project requires knowledge and skills in databases, knowledge discovery (in particular, Web mining), and user interfaces. The candidate should have a firm foundation in at least one of these areas and demonstrate the willingness to learn about the others. In addition, the interdisciplinary nature of this project requires that the candidate has the system-oriented and application-oriented view of Information Systems Science, and that s/he has, or is willing to acquire, the necessary knowledge from Psychology and Educational Science.
