Requirements:
Highly qualified applicants from all over the world are invited to apply, provided that they are not older than 30 years. All applicants must hold or anticipate receiving a university degree within the first half of 2009. This university degree should qualify for the start of a doctorate thesis in their home country and ideally should be equivalent to a European university diploma / degree.

Letter of recommendation:
In addition, we request letters of recommendation from two scientists who are familiar with your academic work and who can judge your potential as a PhD student. Please forward the enclosed letters to the referees and ask them to send their letters of recommendation directly to the dean of the PhD Programme. We can only accept recommendation letters printed on the referee´s official paper and signed by the referee. You can either send the letters directly to the dean´s address above or email a scanned copy to the phd-office [-a-t-] mfpl.ac.at. The student himself / herself is responsible for obtaining the letters and should actively inquire with the respective referees whether the letters have been sent.
Please note that we will be unable to process your application without letters of recommendation. These letters are therefore an essential part of your application, and it is your responsibility to ensure that the referees write to us before November 30, 2008.

Selection procedure and admission:
Complete applications will be reviewed by a selection committee consisting of group leaders of the Vienna Biocenter. The short-listed candidates will receive invitations to visit the Vienna Biocenter for a five-day period of interviews and information exchange. These interviews will take place in January 2009. Travel expenses will be reimbursed, and free accommodation will be provided. Offers of admission will be made to the successful candidates at the end of the interview period.

In relation to several EU research projects (GRASP, CogX, robots@home) and the Austrian Research Network Cognitive Vision we seek highly motivated researchers at PhD and PostDoc level with experience in computer vision, image processing, robotics and/or cognitive vision. Requirements
The ideal candidates would possess strong skills in computer vision methods and good knowledge in either mathematics, cognitive science, or robotics. Candidates preferably should have excellent programming skills, want to work in teams, and should be ready to grasp the opportunity of an exchange with one of our project partners. Background can be, but is not limited to, one of the following disciplines: computer vision, computer science, cognitive science, mathematics, electrical or mechanical engineering, or technical physics.

Education Requirements: M.Sc., Dipl.-Ing. in Computer Science, Math, Physics, Engineering, or IT

These positions shall be filled until March 2008 but can also start immediately. Positions are for a duration of up to four years. Depending on your qualification salary is up to EUR 26.012,- per year (after all social and insurance benefits and taxes this is net EUR 17.417,- per year). Vienna is a student city and we will assist you with finding housing and other living needs.

PhD position in statistics at the department of statistics of the university of innsbruck there is a phD position available for four years starting October 1st, 2007 (or later). The net wage is approximately 17000 Euro per year based on a teaching load of (only) 2 hours a week.

The scope of the research is the development of complex semiparametric regression models including model choice and variable selection. There is also a strong link to spatial statistics and multilevel models. The methodological development is motivated by international collaborations within the following areas: development economics (undernutrition and mortality in developing countries), marketing, ecology (health status of trees, storm damage data), real estate management, insurance statistics etc.

The candidate should

have a diploma or masters degree in statistics,mathematics, econometrics, economics (with good knowledge in statistics) or related fields
have good programming skills in C, C++, R or similar
have good knowledge in statistics and probability theory
be interested in interdisciplinary research and statistical consulting

The Chair (Unit) of Engineering Mechanics (IfM) is an internationally recognized research institution, whose scientific staff holds a prominent role in the development of methods for structural reliability analysis and computational stochastic mechanics. Project Description – Applicants Profile
The project in which the applicant will be involved in is entitled „Quality Assurance of Mechanical Systems and Structures” and is sponsored by the Austrian Science Foundation (FWF). It is concerned with the development of procedures to assess the robustness of largescale structural models (e.g. the Ariane Launcher, shown on the right).
The ideal applicant has a degree in either civil, mechanical, aeronautical engineering (or a related discipline), a solid background in computational mechanics (FE) and programming (MATLAB, C++) and a good command of the English language. Proficiency in one of the major general purpose finite element codes (e.g. NASTRAN) and familiarity with probability/statistics are advantageous.

The Section of Medical Statistics at the Medical University of Vienna seeks to appoint a two year PhD or Post-Doctorial research fellow starting from October 2007. The department has a strong research record and a high international reputation in the fields of Adaptive Designs and Multiple Testing.

Candidates should have a strong interest in methodologically statistical research. Applicants for the postdoctoral position must have a PhD degree, applicants for the PhD position a master degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Medical Informatics, Bioinformatics or a related field.

Candidates should ideally have experience in statistical methodological research and with statistical and mathematical software. They should be willing to actively contribute to the department’s energetic and cooperative research on adaptive-sequential designs and multiple testing.

A PhD position is available at the Institute of Theoretical Physics and Computational Physics at Graz University of Technology, Graz, Austria, as part of a research project founded by the Austrian science foundation (FWF).

The tasks will involve the analytical development and numerical implementation of state-of-the-art many-body methods and their applications to High-Temperature superconductors. The project will be partly carried out in collaboration with world-leading groups in the subject.

The position is available immediately and will start as soon as a suitable candidate will be available, preferably before summer 2007. The appointment can be for up to three years.

Candidates should have a Master or Diploma degree in Physics, excellent academic grades and good practice in numerical methods especially in Fortran 90 or C++.

Ideal candidates should have good knowledges in methods for strongly-correlated systems, or, at least, an interest in learning and working with these methods.

Numerical Renormalization-group and/or cluster methods will be used in the project. Please, point out knowledges in this fields, if available.

The Austrian Science Fund (FWF) is funding a 3 research project in Nonlinear Subdivision Algorithms at the Institute of Geometry at TU Graz for three years. Subdivision broadly means the refinement of discrete data with the aim at smooth limits and has applications in geometric modeling as well as wavelet theory. Literature for nonmathematicians is the paper www.geometrie.tugraz.at/wallner/sgsd.pdf . Literature for mathematicians: all papers on my website which contain subdivision in their title, e.g. www.geometrie.tugraz.at/wallner/grvar.pdf .

Applicants should have a masters degree in Mathematics and a good working knowledge of analysis. Skills in geometry, functional analysis, or even stochastic processes are very welcome. Knowledge of English is necessary. Candidates not yet authorized to work in EU will be considered only in exceptional circumstances.
