We use mouse as a model and molecular, molecular genetic and behavior analyses to address the functional organization of the olfactory sensory neurons and their projections. The Department of Molecular Biology has state-of-the-art resources for molecular/cellular biology and microscopic techniques. The faculty has several relevant core facilities such as a transgenic production facility.

Umea is a one hour flight from the capital Stockholm and the University has 29,000 students, >150 receives a PhD per year and the University is one of Scandinavias top research Universities. Umea is quite international and a good knowledge of English is enough for every-day life (see also www.umu.se/international_office). The fellowship is available immediately and intended for 2 years (with possibility for prolongation for 1 year) and the initial support is in the range 16 000 18 000 SEK/month in the form of a tax-free stipend.

The research is conducted at the MR-Research Center which is a laboratory equipped with two 1.5 T MR scanners. In addition the lab has widespread expertise in neuroimaging methods including DTI and EEG. The MR-Research Center is the neuroimaging core facility for the newly established Stockholm Brain Institute for cognitive and computational neuroscience (http://www.stockholmbrain.se).

The candidate is expected to be a talented, innovative and enthusiastic researcher with a Ph.D awarded within the last five years in Cognitive Neuroscience or related disciplines to work on fMRI projects on body image, multisensory processing, or self-awareness.

The ideal candidate will have expertise in the acquisition and analysis of fMRI data and good programming skills. The candidate is also expected to work within the general framework of the project, but will be encouraged to actively contribute with own ideas and proposals. Applicants with no imaging experience but with a strong background in behavioral neuroscience in the relevant areas are also encouraged to apply.

If the PhD thesis is to be defended after last application date (November 1st 2006), enclose a formal document from the dissertation-committee stating the date of dissertation.
