[Japan] The United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies seeks PhD& Postdoctoral Fellowships – Sustainable Development

The United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) is now accepting applications for its three fellowship programmes: UNU-IAS PhD Fellowships, UNU-IAS Postdoctoral Fellowships, and JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowships.

UNU-IAS is a multi-thematic, interdisciplinary, research and training centre located in Yokohama, Japan. The Institute’s fellowship programmes provide young scientists, policy makers, and developing country scholars with the opportunity to expand their intellectual vision beyond a single scientific field.

UNU-IAS PhD and Postdoctoral Fellowships are offered for a period of 10 months beginning in October 2008. JSPS-UNU Postdoctoral Fellowships are offered for 12-24 months beginning in November 2008.

Postdoctoral candidates must have completed a PhD degree, and PhD candidates must be at the advanced stage of their doctoral dissertation. Candidates’ current research must be closely related to one of the thematic areas of the Institute.

[Japan] Postdoctoral Research Fellows in Cell Biology, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology

Several post-doctoral positions are available at the recently established Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) in Okinawa, Japan, in the laboratory of Dr. Mary Ann Price. The major interest of the Price lab is the mechanisms cells use to decode extracellular signals during development. The current focus of the lab is Hedgehog signal transduction, an important developmental signalling pathway increasingly recognized for its role in human disease, and in particular the regulation of Ci, the key transcription factor on the pathway. Her laboratory uses a variety of approaches to address questions in this field, including biochemistry and mass spectrometry on cultured cells, molecular biology, imaging, and Drosophila genetics (for more information, please see http://www.oist.jp/).Applicants must have a PhD or MD with equivalent research experience. Proficiency in oral and written English is essential. Experience in one of the above techniques is desirable. Starting annual salary will be 4.5-6.0 million yen depending on experience.

We are looking for a promising and highly motivated candidate for a year post-doctoral position in continuous optimization at Tokyo Institute of Technology, one of the leading university of science and technology in Japan. This program is financed by the grant “Front-Runner Nurturing Program” of Global Edge Institute

The candidates must hold or expected to hold a PhD degree in Optimization, Applied Mathematics, Numerical Analysis, Computer Science, or Computational Chemistry by the time of employment. Also, he/she must have a background in continuous optimization or computational chemistry. A research experience focused on theoretical or computational optimization is welcome. However, there will be given priority for candidates who have some experience or interest in optimization problems related to Semidefinite Programming as well as its applications. If possible, the candidate is expected to help the development or the applications of the software SDPA/SDPARA maintained by our group. It will be excellent if the candidate has further knowledge of computational quantum chemistry and/or parallel computing.

Starting Date: April 1st, 2007 or later (negotiable)
Duration: Maximum of ONE year until March 31st, 2008 (no extension)
Salary: Negotiable according to the expected potential of the candidate

Research Environment:
The candidate will have opportunities to cooperate with Mituhiro Fukuda (Global Edge Institute, Tokyo Institute of Technology), Prof. Masakazu Kojima (Department of Mathematical and Computing Sciences, Tokyo Institute of Technology), Maho Nakata (Advanced Center for Computing and Communication, RIKEN) and others experts in optimization during this period.

The research will be conducted all in English and no Japanese is required. The Tokyo Institute of Technology is one of the university which has a high percentage of graduate students and also foreign students in Japan. It has a professional atmosphere to promote research within the campus. Also located in a suburb area within minutes of the cosmopolitan Tokyo.

[Japan] Fellowships for Visiting Scholars at The Center for Southeast Asian Studies Kyoto University

The Center for Southeast Asian Studies of Kyoto University is now accepting applications from scholars and researchers who work on Southeast Asia, or on any one of the countries in that region, and are interested in spending time in Kyoto, Japan, in order to conduct research, write, or pursue other scholarly interests in connection with their field of study.

Since 1963, more than two hundred distinguished scholars have visited the Center for periods ranging from six months to one year. They have availed themselves of the Center’s considerable scholarly resources and the invigorating atmosphere of scenic Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan and the main repository of the country’s cultural treasures, to pursue their interests in Southeast Asian area studies. The Center’s multi-disciplinary character and the diverse research interests of its faculty offer visiting scholars an ideal opportunity for the exchange of ideas and the cultivation of comparative perspectives.

Five fellowships will be awarded for the first half of 2008 on a competitive basis. Fellowships are normally for a six-month duration, although in exceptional cases they can be extended for an additional six months.

Successful applicants will receive an appropriate stipend to cover international travel and living expenses in Kyoto. Research funds will also be provided to facilitate his/her work. Funds will also be allocated for domestic travel, subject to government regulations, and a number of other facilities are available to visiting scholars. Fellows will be expected to reside in Kyoto for the duration of their fellowship period.

Scholars are normally invited to deliver a public lecture during their term at the Center. Fellows will also be encouraged to submit an article for possible publication in the Center’s quarterly journal, Southeast Asian Studies, and to contribute to the online Kyoto Review of Southeast Asia.

Five fellowships, including one librarian position, will become available on the following dates: 1)May 1, 2008

Eligibility
Applicants must be mid-career or senior researchers who will be under 63 years of age at the time of the commencement of the fellowship appointment. This fellowship is not available to individuals currently pursuing graduate degrees or post-doctoral studies.
