Qualifications

Applicants must demonstrate that they have a scholarly research project that will benefit from attending the ARNOVA Conference and requires research at the Rockefeller Archive Center . They must also have a record of prior scholarship, which may be a thesis or dissertation.

Applicants must contact the RAC at least one month prior to applying for the fellowship so that they can clearly identify in the application substantial archival materials that are related to their research project. (Note: Information about the RAC and its collections can be found at http://archive.rockefeller.edu. )

Applications

Applicants should send a letter of no more than four pages describing the research project they will pursue, its purposes, and the methodology they will employ. This should also describe how participation in the ARNOVA Conference and use of the RAC will help move this project forward.

The Scientific Computing and Mathematical Modeling group at GlaxoSmithKline seeks talented advanced undergraduate and graduate students in applied mathematics and computer science for summer internship positions.

Scientific Computing and Mathematical Modeling (SCMM) applies mathematical and computational techniques to a variety of challenging problems in pharmaceutical research. We are the premier mathematical modeling group in the pharmaceutical industry. Our group works on mathematical models related to the biology of disease states and drug interventions, the chemistry and physics of drug formulations and delivery devices, and the structure of large biochemical pathways in cells. In addition, we develop sophisticated computational tools that are used to build and calibrate mathematical models, incorporate large quantities of experimental data, and visualize the results of model-generated computational experiments

For Summer 2007 we are seeking for graduate students and highly advanced undergraduates for three internship positions. The projects are listed below together with the required skills for each position:

Lipoprotein metabolism: Mathematical biology, scientific computing, mathematical modeling

Model calibration and optimization: Numerical analysis, optimization, Matlab programming

Scientific computing: Programming

The Institute of International Education’s Scholar Rescue Fund provides fellowships for scholars whose lives and work are threatened in their home countries. These fellowships permit scholars to find temporary refuge at universities and colleges anywhere in the world, enabling them to pursue their academic work and to continue to share their knowledge with students, colleagues, and the community at large. When conditions improve, these scholars will return home to help rebuild universities and societies ravaged by fear, conflict and repression.

How the Scholar Rescue Fund Works:

Academics, researchers and independent scholars from any country, field or discipline may qualify. Preference is given to scholars with a Ph.D. or other highest degree in their field; who have extensive teaching or research experience at a university, college or other institution of higher learning; who demonstrate superior academic accomplishment or promise; and whose selection is likely to benefit the academic community in the home and/or host country or region.
Applications from female scholars and under-represented groups are strongly encouraged.

Fellowship recipients are expected to resume their teaching, lecturing, research, writing and publishing at an academic institution outside the region of threat.

Fellowships are awarded for visiting academic positions ranging from 3 months to one calendar year. The maximum award is US $20,000.

Fellowships are disbursed through host academic institutions for direct support of scholar-grantees. In most cases, host campuses are asked to match the SRF fellowship award through partial salary/stipend support, research materials, medical insurance, and other in-kind
assistance.

Applications are accepted at any time. Emergency applications receive urgent consideration. Non-emergency applications will be considered according to the following schedule:
Winter 2007: Applications received by January 23; decision by March 1.
Spring 2007: Application received by April 1; decision by June 1.
Fall 2007: Applications received by September 1; decision by November 1.

Due date for preliminary applications: December 15, 2006

The Sustainability Science Program at Harvard University’s Center for International Development invites applications for resident fellowships in sustainability science for the University’s academic year beginning in September 2007.

The fellowship competition is open to advanced doctoral and post-doctoral students, and to professionals engaged in the practice of harnessing science and technology to promote sustainable development.

Successful applicants will spend their fellowships in residence at the Sustainability Science Program, receiving a competitive stipend plus health, office space and computer support, and access to Harvard’s libraries and other research facilities.

Fellows will be expected to spend about half time on their own work, and half time in collaborative work with other fellows and faculty associated with the Program.
The Sustainability Science Program seeks to advance basic understanding of the dynamics of human-environment systems; to facilitate the design, implementation, and evaluation of practical interventions that promote sustainability in particular places and contexts; and to improve linkages between relevant research and innovation communities on the one hand, and relevant policy and management communities on the other.

Applicants should describe how their work would contribute to “sustainability science,” the emerging field of use-inspired research seeking understanding of the interactions between human and environmental systems as well as the application of such knowledge to sustainability challenges relating to advancing development of agriculture, habitation, energy and materials, health and water while conserving the earth’s life support systems.

In addition to general funds available to support this fellowship offering, special funds are available to support applicants from developing countries and Italy, who are therefore particularly encouraged to apply.

Applicants should send via email (not hard copy) a preliminary application by 15 December 2006.

The preliminary application should include:
a cover sheet (http://www.cid.harvard.edu/sustsci/grants/fellows/07_fellows_cover_sheet.htm),
preliminary research proposal (3 pages maximum),
CV (3 pages maximum).

It should be emailed to sustsci_grants@ksg.harvard.edu

Applicants will be notified by December 22 whether they are invited to submit a full proposal.

Full proposals must be supported by a Harvard faculty member who is prepared to work with the fellow. Fellows may make their own faculty contacts, but the Program will also seek to facilitate matching of faculty with fellows.

The deadline for full applications is 1 February 2007.

The Program invariably receives more strong applications than can be supported with the funds available. Prospective fellows are therefore strongly urged to pursue additional sources of stipendiary and research support that they can draw on if they are admitted to the fellowship program but full funding is not available to cover their expenses. Applications from those with their own resources are also welcome.

More information on the Sustainability Science Program and Fellowships is available at http://www.cid.harvard.edu/sustsci/grants/fellows/07_fellows_RFP.htm.
