Universität Dortmund cordially invites students from abroad to our annual Summer Program Dortmund. This international program will be held May 21 to July 27. Courses offered in 2007 focus on engineering and business, complemented by a program in cultural studies offered by our Department of Cultural Studies. These courses are designed for Dortmund and foreign students and will discuss comparative issues of the interplay between culture and technology.

Our target group for the year 2007 are students from partner universities who are finishing their bachelor programs or just entering the master phase. Language of instruction is English, but students are encouraged to use this opportunity to acquire some basic German language skills. Most lectures will be offered within our regular programs as well, so that our guests from abroad can team up with regular Dortmund students. Successful completion of courses will result in credit points which can be transferred to our partner universities. Students from our partner universities pay regular summer tuition fees at their home universities.

June to July is an excellent time to visit Europe. The weather is usually great with day temperatures of about 22°C, a good climate to work and to enjoy a trip downtown in the evening. On the weekends trips to interesting places such as Berlin, Paris or Amsterdam are possible, which are at a few hours ride from Dortmund. Germany has an excellent railway system with bargain offers during the weekends.

The Summer Program curriculum in 2007 will include courses from the fields of:

Applied Mathematics

Automation and Robotics

Biochemical and Chemical Engineering

Business & Economics

Deadline
The deadline for registration for the Summer Program Dortmund 2007 is: March 15, 2007

(please provide a copy of the original and a translation with an explanation of the grading system)

a photograph

any other document/ certificate that may support your application

Additionally, all non-native speakers have to submit:

proof that you will be able to follow lectures in English (this does not need to be a TOEFL test; a certificate of your home university will be accepted)

When you have gathered all of them, please use the online application site. Upon filling the form, you will receive an email with further instructions.

Financial Aid

The European College of Liberal Arts (ECLA) in Berlin announces its eighth International Summer University: “The Mantle of the Prophet: Demons, Saints and Terrorists”, which takes place from July 13th to August 24th 2007.

The key text is Dostoyevsky’s Demons, and the keynote theme derives from the oft-repeated reference to Dostoyevsky as “prophet.” During the six-week course, Demons becomes a central text around which to explore major moral, religious and political issues. These include the historical and intellectual roots of terrorism, its embodiments from state terror to individual violence, and its expression of nihilist and existential questions. In addressing these issues, students and faculty will augment their discussions through the reading of a variety of complementary philosophical, literary and historical texts. In addition, the special Explore Berlin component of the curriculum introduces students to some of the rich cultural offerings of the city.

Hallmarks of the programme are: small seminar groups, regular writing assignments, individual attention in one-on-one tutorials, and a close-knit international community of students and faculty that resides on campus. Students receive six credits in Interdisciplinary Studies. Students from all levels of undergraduate and graduate education are welcome.

A comprehensive programme fee of 4500 Euros covers tuition, campus accommodation, full board, books on loan, reading materials, class excursions, emergency medical insurance, internet access and transportation passes.

Financial aid is available. ECLA is committed to providing financial assistance grants to all successful applicants based on demonstrated financial need.

The application deadline is April 3rd 2007.

The Research Group focuses on law, authority and social behaviour in plural legal settings under conditions of increasing globalisation.

The project deals with local adoptions of international right discourses. It will study the global circulation of legal knowledge and norms of governance by looking how law is used by individuals and groups in conflicts with states. The projects wants to identify the social and political conditions that make people chose recourse to law in their conflicts with the state and how legal recourse relates to other modes of articulating demands. Moreover, it wants to assess the effect of recourse to law in terms of changes in norms and expectations and in modes of the social organisation of demands. Thereby it attempts to trace the changes in what is expected of state rule, the shifting norms of rights and justice, and the changes in practices of claiming rights caused by the interplay of local efforts and international pressures in the institutionalization of norms of governance.

The focus is on states with majority Muslim populations, e.g. Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Indonesia, but also others depending on the applicant’s preferences.
Please consult the website
http://www.eth.mpg.de for more information on the project.

The PhD Grants are generally awarded for 2 years, with the possibility of two six-month extensions. We expect our PhD students to complete a year-long period of fieldwork as part of their studies. The Max Planck Society is committed to raising the proportion of women in under-represented fields; we thus explicitly encourage applications by women. Individuals with disabilities will be given priority, assum-ing equal qualifications.

Applications should include the standard documentation and a project resume.

1. Standard documentation includes:
2. a cover letter
3. a CV including a list of publications
4. a project resume (two to five pages; two alternative ideas may also be considered)
5. photocopies of university degrees
6. names of 2-3 referees, whom we may contact
7. There is no application form to be filled out.
8. Applications may be submitted by email.

Final selection will be made following interviews in November 2006. The project will start in December 2006/January 2007. Please send applications to the following address by 06th October 2006:

Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology,
Personnel Administration,
P. O. Box 11 03 51 D – 06017 Halle/Saale or
email to: wagenbrett@eth.mpg.de.
